Below, I will attempt to summarize what has been revealed through scattered snippits from backgrounds and pieces. However, understand that much of the lore of HeroScape was never revealed. Much is left to mystery, or perhaps more accurately, to the imagination.

HeroScape is centered on the far distant planet of Valhalla. This world is peopled by a species which looks very much like humans, except that they have wings, and can fly. While most have fair skin, this hue can range from red, to blue, to orangeish-tan. These people are called the Kyrie.

Valhalla contains magical springs of water, called Wellsprings. While not all of these Wellsprings have been discovered, it is assumed that there are fifteen in total. Wellsprings grant incredible powers to any who drink from them. This, in turn, has inspired a war on Valhalla, as people strive to control all of the Wellsprings.

Kyrie who drink from a Wellspring are known as Valkyrie. Initially, there were five Valkyrie generals. On one side, was Utgar. Red-skinned and portrayed as brutal and bloodthirsty, Utgar played the role of the unbeatable villain. Allied with him were two other Valkyrie: Einar and Vydar. Both were seen as more strategic, although where Einar favored discipline, Vydar favored tactical advantage. Arrayed against this coalition were Jandar and Ullar, two Valkyrie who upheld the principles of valor and nature.

As the war progressed, Einar and Vydar betrayed Utgar, and joined Jandar and Ullar. Einar’s reasons have never been revealed, but Vydar is said to have left Utgar due to Utgar poisoning waters in his lands. Later on, Aquilla – a female Valkyrie who championed survival and nature – joined Jandar, and Valkrill – a Valkyrie who was more chaos than evil – joined Utgar. It should be noted that Valkrill arrived only after HeroScape was sold to another company, and as a result, many fan fictions do not include him.

While Wellsprings bestowed great powers, the main ability they conferred was the ability to summon. Using a Wellspring, a Valkyrie could reach out through space and time, and literally summon people from across the universe and history.

Thus, while the war on Valhalla does feature the occasional kyrie soldier, most of those in the war are from different times and planets.

Many generals pulled from Earth’s past and future. Vydar summoned futuristic agents. Jandar summoned Vikings, knights, and early American militia. Einar summoned ninjas and samurai. Aquilla summoned Native Americans.

Feylund was a land of magic. From here, Ullar summoned elves. Aquilla summoned dwarves. Utgar summoned vampires and sentient wolves which stand on two feet.

From the savage world of Grut, Utgar summoned orcs. No other species has ever come from Grut, and virtually nothing is known about the world, except that the orcs commonly ride dinosaurs.

The world of Icaria was home to dragons, and all the generals pulled from this ripe land. Utgar summoned Mimring, a fire-breathing lizard. Ullar summoned Charos, a dragon who used his wings to strike back his foes. Vydar summoned Braxas, an acid-spewing queen. Einar summoned Zelrig, a majestic fire-breather. And Jandar summoned Nilfheim, who could summon ice.

The world of Alpha Prime was home to soulborgs – a fusion of flesh and machine, into sentient robots designed to kill. Both Utgar and Vydar recruited heavily from this land, with Jandar finding allies amongst some as well.

The marsh-world of Marr was home to the Marro – a race of skeletal humanoids which operated like a hivemind. Soulless and unstoppable, they are controlled by a Marro Hive (or perhaps several), and their leaders use their telepathic abilities to control the minds of others. Also from Marr came vipers, the sworn enemies of the marro, and loyal to Ullar.

When HeroScape was acquired by a different company, generals summoned from the realms of Eberron and Toril, bringing in a mix of general fantasy-esque units.

This is the lore of HeroScape. Fan fictions will rarely use all of this, but a working understanding of summoning and the sides and generals involved is usually required. What follows is a glossary of some of the more well-known characters summoned to Valhalla. Bolded characters are very well-known, and quite likely to appear in multiple stories.

Agent Carr.
